Spotify’s Year in Music

Posted on Dec 17, 2015 · 2 min read

It’s no secret that the SheerID team LOVES data and that we find it totally fascinating to look at current trends. Last year our client, Spotify, released the data about the trends in music and we could hardly wait to see this year’s data. This year Spotify added more data including trends in the different countries that Spotify is available and even the top stories in music this year. Here’s the highlights from Spotify’s global “Year in Music” 2015.

Top Artists:

  1. Drake
  2. Ed Sheeran
  3. The Weeknd
  4. Maroon 5
  5. Kanye West

Top Tracks:

  1. Lean On – Major Lazer
  2. Cheerleader – Omi
  3. Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson
  4. See You Again – Wiz Khalifa
  5. Love Me Like You Do – Ellie Goulding

Top Playlists:

Spotify users listened to…

  • 1 million different artists, which is 167,493 more than last year
  • 5 million different tracks, which is 3,025,597 more than last year

Even the season and time of the year showed changes in our listening habits:

  • Winter – Mark Ronson, Ed Sheeran, Hozier
  • Spring – Wiz Khalifa, Ellie Goulding, Major Lazer
  • Summer – Major Lazer, OMI, Wiz Khalifa
  • Fall – Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Drake

If you have a Spotify account, you can also go in and see your year in review. It’s fun to see stats like your music tastes throughout an entire year, how many minutes you’ve listened to music, what your favorite artists were, and how many different artists and tracks you listened to.

This year I personally listened to 42 thousand minutes of Spotify. That’s equivalent to 693 hours, or 29 days! I also listened to 475 different artists and 1,411 different tracks.

While we love all this great data from Spotify, we also love that Spotify offers a student discount. If you are a current college or university student, get verified to receive 50% off a premium subscription to Spotify. For more information on the Spotify student discount visit
