In 2014, DirecTV used SheerID to offer students at 10 universities access to NFLSundayTicket.TV, which gives users access to NFL games outside their local market, for a discounted price of $199.99. SheerID verifies that customers redeeming DirecTV’s student offer currently attend Harvard University, Ohio State University, Syracuse University, the University of Alabama, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Florida, the University of Michigan, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, or the University of Washington.
After the success of the 2014 pilot program, DirecTV and NFLSundayTicket.TV expanded the offer to include all full-time students attending over 2,000 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. the following year.
In a press release, the streaming service provider reported that university students were the heaviest users of NFLSundayTicket.TV in 2015. More than a third of all subscribers were students. Based on the popularity of the service with college students, they extended the offer to full-time students at 2-year colleges in 2016.
