Summary
BookBeat is one of Europe’s leading streaming services for audiobooks and ebooks, with more than 1.2 million paying users across over 10 markets. To extend its customer base, the company set out to reach students early—before their listening habits were set—and turn them into readers and listeners for life. With SheerID, BookBeat gives verified students a discount on its basic package, and the program is now in its fifth year, supported by a channel mix tuned market by market and a dedicated student page. The audience BookBeat acquires this way is its stickiest: six months after sign-up, student retention is twice as high as retention for other users, and around 40% of everyone who has taken the student offer is still subscribed.

Challenge
BookBeat serves readers and listeners who want books to fit naturally into their everyday lives. Growing that base meant reaching a group the company had not yet built a program around: students.
The logic was long-term rather than promotional. Students who discover audiobooks during their studies form habits that outlast them. “By reaching students early on, before their audiobook habits were set, we hoped to shape loyal listening behavior that could carry on beyond their student years,” BookBeat’s Senior Growth Marketer Alice Koskela says.
The hard part is attention. BookBeat competes with other players in the digital book market and, more broadly, with everything else students spend their time on. Winning a sign-up means arriving with the right message, at the right moment, with the right books in front of the right person.
A student rate also has to hold up commercially. A discount only protects its own economics when it reaches the audience it was built for, and BookBeat runs its offer across more than 10 markets with different consumer behaviors and a different channel mix in each one. Before committing to a vendor, the team pressure-tested both the technical side of verification and what the student program would mean financially.
Solution
BookBeat partnered with SheerID to instantly verify student status and ensure exclusive access to eligible users. While specific offers differ by market, the seamless verification experience remains universal.
Choosing SheerID was a cross-team decision. Product, marketing, business development, and the development team all took part, testing how the technology performed and how the program would affect loyalty and long-term engagement. Implementation then stayed in-house: BookBeat’s own web team built it, with no external consultants.
BookBeat crafted an onboarding experience tailored specifically to students post-verification. A dedicated hub features clear offer details, a step-by-step getting-started guide, and curated book lists highlighting trending BookTok titles to help new subscribers dive right in.
Promotion runs across a deliberately broad mix: search and paid social, email and BookBeat’s own channels, partnerships with student organizations and affiliate networks, and newer bets such as programmatic, and user-generated content.
For back to school, the team leans digital rather than physical—including screens booked in Finnish university canteens—and keeps testing channels and placements market by market.
The collaboration has been great since the start. Setup and implementation were really smooth, and it has been going well ever since.
Results
Five years in, the student program continues to show excellent retention numbers, with no decline in sight. Six-month retention among student subscribers is double that of standard users, with nearly 40% of all-time sign-ups still subscribed today.
In subscription models, retention is everything. By proving that students stay engaged over time, BookBeat validated a growth strategy built on loyalty, not just a discounted entry point, but a foundation for long-term relationships.
Looking ahead, BookBeat is expanding into channels that reach students at peak moments—scaling programmatic, out-of-home, and in-app placements with the same test-and-learn mindset that has powered five successful back-to-school seasons.
At its core, the priority remains loyalty: acquiring more students, keeping them long-term, and guiding each listener toward their next favorite book.
Students are a very loyal group. Six months after sign-up, retention is twice as high for them as for a normal user. And looking at all the users who added the student offer, around 40% are still with us today.
